Saving a list of map tiles

There are two types of items that allow you to store a collection of custom map tiles that work differently and have their own uses. Unlike building up a little collection of tiles in your hotbar, tiles stored in these will be permanent until deleted, and will show up in the build window.

You can create these items in your inventory. Once they are in your inventory, click on them to edit them.

"Add Multiple" mode

The default view when editing a Map Tile List or Tileset Definition is a list of all of the tiles. There's another option that's intended to make it faster to set up a bunch of tiles at once.

To use this mode:

  • Click on the Map Tile List or Tileset Definition item in your inventory.
  • Choose the "Add multiple" option in the window that comes up.
  • Pick the tile sheet you want to use.
  • Set the tile properties at the bottom of the window (you may need to scroll the window down a bit if you want to adjust the autotiling or animation settings.)
  • Drag over the image, and press "Add" to add those tiles to the item with the current properties.

Additional notes:

  • "Add" will skip tiles that already exist in the item, and will go in column-major order by default, unless "→" is selected, in which case it will be row-major.
  • "Edit" will replace the properties on the selected tiles with the ones you have entered in.
  • Right clicking on a tile will copy its properties to the window. You can right click on a tile to get its properties, modify them, select the tile (or tiles), then click "Edit" to save the new properties.
  • "Delete" will remove tiles from the item.

Map Tile List item

This item type stores multiple custom tiles. When you a place a tile using this item, what gets stored on the map is a copy of the tile in the item, so you can delete or change the item freely without affecting any maps.

There is also a Map Tile item type that works similarly, but only stores a single tile.

Tileset Definition item

This item type is similar to a Map Tile List, but when you place a tile from this item, you are actually creating a link between the tile on the map and the item. That means that when the tiles stored in this item are changed, all instances of those tiles that were previously placed on the map will change, and if this item is deleted or any tiles stored in this item are deleted, then previously placed tiles that pointed at the item will lose their appearance.

Tileset Definitions are good for making it easier to rearrange a tile sheet in the future, but like with tile sheets, the item has to continue to exist.

Copying a tile into an item

If you have the editing window open for a Map Tile List or Tileset Definition, you can right click on a tile in your hotbar, in the selection window, in the build menu, or in your inventory, and choose to copy it to the item you are currently editing.
